What’s the value of a tree?

I want to pick up on a topic that I talk about a lot, the value of trees. How do we go about putting a monetary value on a tree? 💷

🌳 Some trees might simply be ‘priceless’ – the ancient trees that we know have survived for hundreds of years and are rare, beautiful and irreplaceable beauties

🌳Some might be screens for noise and pollution on busy roads keeping the air around schools clean for the kids to learn and play in a safe environment

🌳Some might be planted in memory of fallen soldiers, loved ones or in celebration of a global or national event

🌳Some might be habitats for protected species such as door mice, bats, birds and others

There are currently 3 tree valuation systems in use, CAVAT being the most widely used. At the moment there is little focus on the biodiversity and carbon benefits of trees within the valuation systems. Adding value for the carbon sequestered or the animal and plant life supported by a tree is new and emerging. To me this is a no-brainer, these ‘services’ a tree provides are key

Giving the information about what ‘services’ a tree provides in a user-friendly way is key to getting those widely considered and understood. The use of the EPC style rating for carbon impacts of trees has been produced by Barcham Trees in their eco tree tags and is such a useful and recognisable graphic. I tell you now, our nation’s much loved Oak is an ‘A’ rated tree 🥇

Having emerged from a pandemic where trees were mental health life-savers and now being in the midst of a climate crisis where trees can help save the day, I would argue that each one of them is priceless

What do you think is the most valuable asset a tree provides? Could you put a price tag on that?
